Claudia Brahms & Noel Mount Founders of Brahms Mount - American Made Blankets
The Hallowell granite company was founded in 1866, and was one of the first manufacturing production lines in north America. the buildings were in poor condition when Claudia Brahms and Noel Mount moved into the old office building in 1983 and began a restoration project and business adventure that has gained national recognition.
Brahms Mount is a careful blend of both the art and science involved in creating tactile, heirloom textile fabrics. Claudia and Noel have diligently cultivated these skills for twenty three years. Well prepared with extensive backgrounds in Textile manufacturing and design, they know that you cannot simply lay yarns together side by side and hope that the fabric produced will have tactile appeal, lasting value and be correct for the application chosen. The art is involved with the design and the choice of ingredients, and the science is in the way they are combined together into a textile that will be ideal for the use it was intended.
They chose the more difficult adventure and created a product line that they could weave, package and sell under their own label, Brahms Mount Textiles. Noel found antique Crompton and Knowles W3 shuttle looms in closed mills and in scrap yards in Rhode Island and set to work to restore them. Claudia hand wove fabric constructions to create their first products.
Innovation has been the hallmark of those last twenty three years. The first was a series of cotton blankets that weigh about 8 pounds and provide four-season comfort to any user. Their baby blankets have been a cornerstone product of a Natural fibers catalog for many years and is advertised as an heirloom in the catalog. They are the only 100% Linen blanket weaver in North America and manufacture a selection of Personal Day Blankets, Throws and Linen Towels of exceptional quality. The quality of a Brahms Mount fabric is revealed when it is in use. Quality is of paramount importance.
The team that is Brahms Mount Blankets is a collection of people who are artists in their own right, committed to developing their artistic talents. This brings an assurance that allows Noel and Claudia the time to continue to bring breath and creativity to their product. Noel was born on a tiny Island on the west coast of Ireland, and Claudia in New York City. An unlikely start, but together they have created a fusion of fiber, function and fashion that might well have been written in the stars. They share a passion for designing and manufacturing original textile fabrics in this country.
